Sound Editing
Sound Editor | Experimental Sound Project | Spring 2024
This project was created for my Sound Editing & Mixing course at San Francisco State University. The assignment was to choose a poem and build an experimental soundscape using both found sound effects and original recordings.
For this project, I wanted my main focus to be on a childhood memory in the early 2000s, inspired by the poem I chose and the personal memories it brought up for me. The result is a distorted, experimental version of a day in the life of a child: siblings playing, birds chirping in the neighborhood, the lawn being mowed, breakfast being cooked in the kitchen, the sounds of the television, and laughter of a family.
I edited these elements into a dreamlike version to reflect the way memories feel, not crystal clear, but emotional, layered, and a little fuzzy around the edges. The goal was to transport the listener into a moment that feels familiar, even if it’s not their own.
Poem: Country Roads by Rebekah Grilly - Take me home today. Not to this one. My first one where my brothers and sisters lay. Where dad cut the grass and mum rubbed my head and my biggest fear lay under my bed. Take me home to yesterday.
